How to Use Coyote Time to Make Your Levels More Challenging ;)

Are players as skilled as they think they are?

The simple answer is, probably not. Human error, like mistiming a jump, can lead to frustration, especially when the controls are unforgiving. As developers, it's our job to give players a bit of leeway, and that's where "coyote time" comes in.

So, what exactly is coyote time?

It’s a clever trick used in platformers to smooth out gameplay and reduce frustration. Named after Wile E. Coyote from Looney Tunes, it gives players a brief grace period after running off a platform where they can still jump, even though they’re technically in mid-air. This little buffer helps avoid those infuriating moments where a jump is missed by a hair, making the experience more enjoyable.

But how can developers use this to their advantage?

By carefully measuring the maximum jump distance, including the extra boost from coyote time, you can set platforms just far enough apart to challenge players. However, don’t overdo it—players might get discouraged if it feels too un-do-able. Instead, use it strategically, like placing bonus points or extra resources (think ammo or health packs) on those tricky platforms. This way, you're rewarding skill while keeping the challenge engaging.

Until next time, keep pushing those limits!
